Privacy Policy

Echo records voice and generates transcripts. This page explains exactly what is collected, why, and how to control or remove it.

What we collect

  • Voice audio — only from members who explicitly opt in (via the /echo join command or the consent button) during an active /echo start session. Members who do not opt in are never recorded, even if they are audible in the same voice channel.
  • Transcripts and summaries — text generated from that opted-in audio, associated with the server, channel, date, and the Discord user IDs of participants who consented.
  • Basic Discord metadata needed for the bot to function: server ID, channel ID, and user IDs of people who run commands or opt in.

We do not collect messages, DMs, or any audio from members who have not opted in.

What we don't do

  • Raw audio is never written to disk. It is streamed to the transcription provider in memory and discarded immediately after a transcript segment is returned.
  • We do not sell or share your data with advertisers.
  • We do not use recorded content to train AI models.

Third-party processors

To generate transcripts and summaries, opted-in audio and transcript text are sent to:

  • Deepgram (speech-to-text)
  • Google (Gemini API) (summarization and the /echo ask question-answering feature)

Each processes data under their own privacy terms and does not retain it longer than needed to return a result to Echo.

Retention

  • Transcripts and summaries are kept for a configurable retention window (default: 30 days), after which they are automatically deleted.
  • Any user can run /echo forget at any time to immediately delete all transcript segments attributed to them.
  • Server admins can adjust the retention window for their server.

Your rights

Since Echo only ever records users who explicitly opt in, you are always in control: opt in only when you're comfortable, opt out anytime with /echo leave, and delete your own data anytime with /echo forget.

Changes

This policy may be updated as the project evolves; material changes will be reflected here with an updated date.
